Nainital sits about 140 km north of Bareilly, and on a clear morning the drive takes roughly three and a half hours. The road runs through Kichha and Haldwani before it starts to climb at Kathgodam, where the plains end and the Kumaon hills begin. Most of the journey is easy highway driving; the last 35 km is a steady ascent with tight bends that rewards an unhurried pace.

The best months to travel

March to June is the main window, when the plains are already uncomfortable and the lake district stays in the low twenties.
